They are looking for donations of two pounds of barbeque meat (per individual donor), chips, cookies or bars, and bottled water or Gatorade. WE Care is also seeking food and beverage donations to keep their work crew going strong. Anyone interested in volunteering some time and labor should call Lisa Shelton at 56. Equipment brought to the work sites should also be marked to identify the owner. Volunteers are also asked to bring a 3/8 inch drive ratchet and an electric drill, if possible. August 9 resurfacing will be done at East, and equipment will be installed at West Elementary. August 7 and 8 will consist of working on the equipment at East Elementary. According to Lisa Shelton, a member of the WE Care group, at least 15 people will be needed on site at all times each of the three days. A representative of the playground equipment company will be at the site to supervise the assembly and installation. This is a job that will require physical labor, and volunteers must be at least 14 years old. With the end of the project in sight, WE Care is reaching out to the community for help with the assembly and installation of the new equipment, which will be happening August 7, 8 and 9. Concerns about the age of the current play equipment and safety issues, combined with budget constraints for the Allamakee Community School District, led to the WE Care group undertaking this task. West Elementary will also receive an X-Wave, as well as a Bongo Jungle Climber. The project will involve resurfacing part of the East Elementary playground with a SofTile KrosLock surface and installing new play equipment, including a Pegasus Webscapes Climber and an X-Wave. Thanks to the support of the community, the group has been able to raise $100,000 to purchase new playground equipment for the East Elementary and the West Elementary playgrounds in Waukon. The WE Care Partners in Education group's playground project is moving ever closer to completion.
